With 164 Congressional co-sponsors (including three added today), H.Res 121 demands an unequivocal apology from the Japanese government for its role in sexually enslaving 200,000 girls and women during WWII. It has been championed by three of the Bay Area's most prominent members of Congress. Introduced by Rep. Mike Honda, it was shepherded by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos where it passed with an overwhelming 39-2 margin. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement in favor of that resolution, and 121 advocates are hoping she will continue her support by scheduling a vote before the August recess.
The Japanese government threatened to withdraw support for the US occupation of Iraq, and warned Speaker Pelosi that passage of the resolution "will almost certainly have lasting and harmful effects on the deep friendship, close trust and wide-ranging cooperation our two nations now enjoy."
