국제 학술대회에 처음 참가했을 때다. 1995년 보스톤에서 열렸던 INFOCOM으로 기억하는데 학생봉사자로 가서 일을 돕는 대신 학회 참가비를 면제받는 조건이였다. 튜토리얼 진행 좀 도우면서 학회에 참석했었다. 논문 발표없이 처음 가보는 대규모 학회라서 아는 사람이라고는 같은 연구실 친구들 뿐이고, 유명한 사람들도 이름과 얼굴이 따로라서 인상적인 만남은 없었던 것 같다. QoS에 관한 패널이 무척 재미었던 정도가 기억에 남았을 뿐이다. 그리고 몇 년후 졸업할 때 즈음해서 다시 INFOCOM을 가게 됐었다. 그 때는 논문도 있고, 인턴도 해보고 아는 사람도 좀 생기고 해서 복도에서 만나 얘기할 사람도 있고해서 처음 참석했을 때보다는 덜 심심하고 힘들었다. 직장을 구해야하는 때라서 아는 사람 지나가면 달려가서 인사하고 혹시 신임 연구원 구하냐, 내 박사 논문 연구 내용 관심있느냐 뭐 이런 소개를 해야했었다. 그래도 학회 참석자들의 반의 반도 모르던 때라서 친한 친구랑 복도에서 서로 마치 얘기를 나누는 듯이 서 있다가 말을 걸어보고 싶은 사람이 지나가면 매정하게 저버리고 휘리릭 달려갔다 오곤을 반복하면서, 어지간히 친하지 않으면 이렇게 매정하게 할 수 있겠냐, 우리 정말 친한 친구다 하면서 웃어댔었다.
박사 졸업하고 10년이 지나고 나니, 내 분야 학회에 가면 대부분의 참가자들을 알고, 석박사 학생들만 좀 낯설고 하니까 이제는 거꾸로 학회에서 얘기하고 만날 사람이 너무 많아서 바쁘다. 친한 친구들이랑 회포풀고 싶어도 몇 분 이상은 길게 시간이 안 나서 저녁에 따로 약속을 잡아야하고. 꼭 만나서 연구 얘기를 하려면 미리 연락해서 한두시간 시간을 맞춰놓아야한다. 점심, 저녁 여기저기 다른 사람들과 먹으면서 정보도 얻고, 요새 논문 얘기들을 하다보면 내 학생들이랑은 밥도 한 끼 같이 못먹고 오곤 한다. 대신 학회 나가기 전에 학생들과 중요한 논문들은 같이 챙겨 읽어보고, 누구 만나서 무슨 얘기할까 준비해간다. 내 딴에는 잘 준비한다고 하는데, 어떻게 준비해야에 대해서는 적어놓은게 없던 차, 졸업생에게서 학회에 가기 전에 해야하는 준비사항에 대한 조언을 적은 이멜이 왔기에 들은 내용은 소개한다. 웹페이지도 있고, 개인이 정리한 how-to도 있다. 국제 학술대회를 처음 가는 학생들에게 많은 도움이 될 것 같아 블로그에 소개한다.

- read the list of accepted papers
- try to get and read those papers that you'd like to read before taking off
- prepare a list of authors who you'd like meet and discuss
- pick the sessions/presentation your want to attend in advance
related to meeting other researchers
- (with your adviser/colleagues) compile a list of people you'd like to meet and who might attend the conference
- ping/schedule? meetings with people when the meeting deserves this (just to increase the chances of the meeting to happen)
related to maximizing your trip
- check if there are any universities/research labs close to the conference venue/on the way there where you would like to
give a talk/visit someone. If so, contact the person and organize the meeting/seminar in advance.
related to socializing
- don't hang around with members of the institute (you can do it any other time)
but support each other, e.g., by introducing to someone, throwing the conversation ball,
pointing out at interesting discoveries/people
- when joining a group of unknowns, e.g., when taking a seat at the lunch/dinner table,
introduce yourself asap (longer you wait, more cumbersome it will be make this step later on)

- discuss the items with your adviser and fellow students well in advance (you might want to coordinate and
split the knowledge harvesting part among your fellows)
- think what is missing/should be dropped/improved and send me your comments.
